Overview

BillBoss, LLC ("BillBoss," "we," "us," or "our") provides the BillBoss mobile application and related services (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices and rights you ("you" or "your") have. By using the Service, you agree to the practices described here.

BillBoss helps people coordinate how to split a bill. BillBoss does not process, hold, or transfer money. Payments between you and the people you split with take place in third-party payment applications that you choose to open.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to personal information we collect through the BillBoss application and related online services. It does not apply to third-party services you access through the Service, including the payment applications you use to send or receive money, which are governed by their own privacy policies.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account and identity information you provide

  • Your mobile telephone number, which you provide to sign in and which serves as your account identifier.
  • Your name and username, which you set in your profile.
  • Your date of birth, which we collect once to confirm that you are at least 13 years old (see Section 10).
  • A profile photograph, if you choose to add one.

2.2 Payment preferences

Payment handles that you choose to save, such as a Venmo or Cash App username, together with your preferred payment method and display currency. These handles let the people you split with pay you in their own payment application. We do not collect your payment-account credentials, card numbers, or bank details, and we do not access your payment accounts.

2.3 Contacts, if you enable contact matching

If you grant contacts access, we create one-way, irreversible cryptographic hashes of your contacts' telephone numbers on your device and transmit only those hashes to determine which of your contacts already use BillBoss. We do not transmit or store your contacts' names, and your contacts' raw telephone numbers never leave your device. We do not store your address book.

2.4 Bills you create

When you create a split, we collect the information needed to coordinate it, including line items and amounts and the names and telephone numbers of the people you choose to split with, together with the status of who has indicated payment.

2.5 Receipt information

When you scan or upload a receipt, the image is transmitted to our optical-character-recognition ("OCR") provider solely to read the receipt. We do not retain the receipt image. We do retain the information read from the receipt, which may include the merchant name and location, the line items and amounts, the payment-method brand printed on the receipt (for example, "Visa" or "Cash"), and the date. We do not collect or store payment-card numbers. This information is associated with your account and is used to build your split and to understand how the Service is used.

2.6 Device and usage information

  • A device push-notification token, if you enable notifications, so we can deliver split and payment alerts.
  • Product-analytics information about how you use the Service, such as which steps of a flow you reach, timing, the outcome of permission prompts, and how you came to sign up (for example, whether you followed an invitation and who invited you).
  • Technical information such as your app version, device platform, and diagnostic data.

2.7 Communications

Information you submit when you contact us or send feedback through the Service.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use personal information to provide and operate the Service (including creating splits, matching you with contacts who use BillBoss, and coordinating payment); to send transactional communications such as sign-in verification codes and split notifications; to secure the Service and prevent fraud and abuse; to measure and improve the Service; and to comply with legal obligations.

Where the EU General Data Protection Regulation or the UK GDPR applies, our legal bases are: performance of our contract with you (to provide the core Service); your consent (for optional device permissions such as contacts, camera, and notifications, which you may withdraw at any time); our legitimate interests (to secure, analyze, and improve the Service); and compliance with legal obligations.

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share personal information only as described below.

4.1 Service providers (sub-processors)

We share information with vendors that process it on our behalf and under contract, solely to provide the Service:

  • Supabase provides our cloud hosting, database, file storage, and authentication.
  • Google provides the Gemini interface that performs receipt OCR. Receipt images are processed to return text to us, are not used to train Google's models, and are not retained by us.
  • Apple delivers push notifications through the Apple Push Notification service.
  • Our SMS provider, acting through our authentication provider, delivers one-time sign-in verification codes and receives your telephone number solely for that purpose.
  • A currency-rate provider supplies exchange-rate data. We send no personal information to this provider.

4.2 Other users

Information you include in a split, such as your name and the amount owed, is shared with the other people in that split so the split can be coordinated.

4.3 Payment applications

When you choose to pay or request payment, BillBoss opens a third-party payment application using a deep link prefilled with the amount and the recipient's payment handle. You complete the payment in that application. BillBoss does not transmit your information to payment applications and does not access your payment accounts.

4.4 Legal, safety, and business transfers

We may disclose information if required by law or legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of BillBoss, our users, or others. If BillBoss is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Privacy Policy.

5. We Do Not Sell Your Information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not use advertising identifiers, we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and we do not share your information with data brokers or advertising networks.

6. SMS and Text Messaging

Consent and opt-in

BillBoss uses text messages only to verify your phone number when you sign in. On the sign-in screen you enter your mobile number and tap "Send code." Tapping "Send code" is your consent to receive a one-time verification code by SMS at that number. That same screen shows this consent notice, along with links to this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service.

What we send

Every message from BillBoss is a transactional one-time passcode used to confirm it is you. We do not send marketing, promotional, or recurring text messages, and we do not text the people you split bills with from our number.

Message frequency and cost

You receive a text only when you request a code by signing in, so frequency varies with how often you sign in. Message and data rates may apply, depending on your mobile carrier and plan.

Opting out and getting help

Reply STOP to any message at any time to stop receiving texts from BillBoss. Reply HELP for help, or contact us at Sebastian@billboss.ai.

Mobile information sharing

No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Information sharing with subcontractors who provide support services, such as our SMS delivery provider, is permitted solely to deliver the verification codes you request. This information is not shared with any third parties for their own purposes.

7. Data Retention and Deletion

You can delete your account at any time from within the app, in the Profile screen, using "Delete Account." Deleting your account permanently removes your account and associated personal information from our active systems, and removes or de-identifies your information on splits organized by other users. You may also request deletion by contacting Sebastian@billboss.ai.

We retain personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service, and thereafter only as required to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.

8. Your Privacy Rights

8.1 EU and UK residents (GDPR / UK GDPR)

You have the right to access, correct, delete, and port your personal information; to restrict or object to certain processing; and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection supervisory authority.

8.2 California residents (CCPA / CPRA)

You have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use and disclose it, the right to access and delete your personal information, the right to correct inaccurate information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising your rights. As stated in Section 5, we do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

9. International Data Transfers

We are based in the United States, and we process and store personal information in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, for transfers from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland.

10. Children's Privacy

The Service is intended for users who are at least 13 years old. We collect a date of birth at sign-up solely to confirm that a user meets this age requirement. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact Sebastian@billboss.ai and we will delete it.

11. Security

We protect personal information using technical and organizational measures, including encryption of data in transit, storage of authentication credentials in the device keychain, and database access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you through the Service or by other appropriate means and update the "Last updated" date above.
